This week we will be continuing Unit 8, Get Out the Map! and learning about different kinds of maps, parts of a map, and what they are used for. Students will be reading stories Monday through Thursday about maps. The stories should be read and discussed at home with as much independence as possible, and will include a question to be completed to prove understanding of the story. At center time students will complete independent work drawing and writing about maps, as well as practicing typing, spelling, phonics, reading, and vocabulary on the computer.
Spelling and Phonics
This week we will begin Unit 13, trick words, and multi syllabic words with suffixes (-s, -es, -ed, and -ing). This week there are new spelling words, however because of having a busy week that will include some fun activities such as career day, and our vocabulary parade, I am giving students 2 weeks to learn these words. The new words include the trick words work, their and new, as well as multi syllabic words with suffixes invents, publishing, indented, bedbugs, finishing, expected, and dishpans. We will also focus on how to properly divide these syllables. We will practice letter sounds, and extend vowel sounds. We will use sentence frames, white boards, and letter cards to practice writing and building multi syllabic words with suffixes, and trick words. The spelling test will be on Friday 6/3. This week we will begin Chapter 10: Three-Dimensional Shapes. Students will be able to identify cubes, prisms, cones, and cylinders.
